Sildenafil (commonly known by the brand name Viagra) and Tadalafil (commonly known by the brand name Cialis) are medications used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. They belong to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Both medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis to help achieve and maintain an erection. They do this by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis during sexual stimulation.
The primary differences are the duration of action and the onset of effect. Sildenafil typically works within 30 to 60 minutes and lasts about 4 to 5 hours. Tadalafil can take up to 2 hours to take effect but lasts up to 36 hours.
Sildenafil should be taken on an empty stomach about 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. Tadalafil can be taken with or without food, at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions on dosing.
Sildenafil is usually taken as needed. Tadalafil can be taken as needed or once daily at a lower dose. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosing regimen for you.
If you find that Sildenafil or Tadalafil doesn’t work for you, speak to your healthcare provider. They may adjust your dose or suggest alternative treatments.
Common side effects include headaches, flushing, upset stomach, nasal congestion, back pain, and muscle aches. These side effects usually subside after a few hours.
These medications are not suitable for everyone. Individuals taking nitrates for chest pain, those with severe heart or liver problems, or those who have had a recent stroke or heart attack should not take these medications. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting treatment.
If you experience severe side effects, such as chest pain, sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism), seek medical attention immediately.
Drinking excessive alcohol can reduce the effectiveness of these medications and increase the risk of side effects. It is best to limit alcohol consumption when using these medications.
Some medications can interact with Sildenafil and Tadalafil, such as nitrates, alpha-blockers, and certain antifungal or antibiotic medications. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking.
Store these medications at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep them in their original packaging and out of reach of children.
